SALLY KWAN
Mortgage brokerage is quite unheard of in Asia. When I first joined the industry in 1992, there weren’t too many Chinese working as independent mortgage brokers. In terms of female Chinese independent brokers, I think I was one of the first, if not the first in the industry.
In Canada mortgage brokerage has been around since 30 odd years ago and market share has increased substantially over the years. It was estimated that as of 2004, residential financing arranged by mortgage brokers represent approximately 30% market share and is growing at a substantial pace. U.S. is more sophisticated in this area and has about 75% market share.
Nowadays more & more consumers are recognizing the value added benefits provided by mortgage brokers and the industry is forecasting a higher demand for its service in the coming years. As such, recent years saw a great number of new people joining the mortgage brokerage industry.
